Who We Are, What We Stand For

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the United States. Its story is essentially the story of the American struggle for racial justice over the last century. The organization was founded in 1909 in response to the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois. A group of Black and white activists joined forces to create a formal organization that would fight for the political, social, and economic equality of Black Americans. Despite significant progress in recent decades, the fight continues today. The NAACP remains committed and proactive concentrating on contemporary issues such as: 1) Criminal Justice Reform - tackling mass incarceration and ensuring police accountability, 2)Voting Rights - Combating voter and gerrymandering, 3)Economic Equity -Addressing the racial wealth gap and promoting fair access to healthcare.

We Have Come this Far By Faith

"Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, felt in the day that hope unborn had died.  Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet. Come to the place on which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered. Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last where the white gleam of our star is cast"
